Abstract

Abstract

In certain parts of the world, the founding of new towns and extensive urban development are still going ahead rapidly at the beginning of the twenty-first century. In Europe, however, which already has a high degree of urbanization, more cautious interventions into the urban structure are required. By means of both permanent and temporary interventions, attempts are being made to meet the complex requirements of a changing modern society. The interdisciplinary cooperation of partners from different fields- such as culture, architecture, and economics-, and the participation and initiatives of citizens play an important role in this. This volume pursues the question of how individual projects not only stand out within the complexity of urban structures but can also bring about long-lasting change. This book presents fortyseven European examples from the Urban Intervention Award Berlin that showed quite surprising solutions, and which received awards from the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment in 2010 and 2013.

Abstract

Event-Cities 4 is the latest in the Event-Cities series from Bernard Tschumi, documenting recent built and theoretical projects in the context of his evolving views on architecture, urbanism, and design. Event-Cities C4 follows directly from the work ofEvent-Cities 3, which examined the interaction of architectural content, concept, and context. This volume takes the interaction a step further, looking at a series of projects for which program or context are insufficient as a generative conceptual strategy, hence requiring a different approach. Tschumi has said, “Over the past years, there is one word I have almost never used, except in order to attack it: 'form.'” In Event-Cities 4, Tschumi introduces the “concept-form”: a concept generating a form, or a form generating a concept, so that one reinforces the other. The concept may be programmatic, technological, or social. The form may be singular or multiple, regular or irregular. Concept-forms act as organizing devices or common denominators for the multiple dimensions of programs and their evolution over time, and drive the projects featured in this book. Highlights include master plans for a pair of media-based work spaces and cultural campuses in Singapore and Abu Dhabi; a major master plan for a financial center with 40,000 projected inhabitants in the Dominican Republic; the innovative Blue Residential Tower in New York City; a group of museums and cultural buildings in France, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and South Korea; a pedestrian bridge in France; and a “multi-programmatic” furniture piece, the TypoLounger. The book contains more than twenty of the Tschumi firm's recent projects, showcasing the most current and forward-looking designs of one of the world's leading architectural practices.

Abstract

Public space is essential to vital cities and inclusive, resilient societies. But how might we create more of it in our densely packed cities? The solution is lying before us: the vast amount of space that can be reclaimed by transforming areas dominated by cars and now congested with traffic into truly public spaces. But before we can do that, we must work toward a better balance between mobility and place: more room for pedestrians and cyclists, much less for cars and trucks transporting both people and goods. Traffic Space Is Public Space is no traditional book on planning principles in urban design. It won’t give you a rigid set of rules. But it will introduce you to new approaches and strategies to trigger change: networking, shared use of space, a circular urban metabolism and the revitalization of local economies, a participative process involving local businesses, and an appropriate aesthetic. Packed with inspiring projects from around the world, including some from the authors own urban planning and design firm, Artgineering, Traffic Space Is Public Space offers forward-looking insights into how we can increase the quality of space and thus life in in our cities.
